Hints for understanding/learning/memorizing your poem:


  • Look up any unfamiliar words.
  • Look closely at the punctuation. Most poems are written in sentences. Do not pause at the end of the line unless there is a piece of punctuation. Read the sentences.
  • Talk about what the poem means.
  • Identify the poetic devices: Are there symbols, metaphors, personification...?
